In my job I'm working on delivering these alerts to digital advertising screens in big cities so the authorities can have the kids picture plastered around the city within minutes of them going missing. It'll probably be working Summer 2009 in the UK and New York.

This is really awesome news ML. Please let us (me) know as soon as it comes alive. If you have articles regarding it's development you could point us towards that would be really wonderful as I would like post a link to it on my blog and our business blog. Thanks :)

Ordinarily I would say it is none of my business, but they make it our business by going on television and making their lives our entertainment.

This is what bugs me about these shows. There is another one, Jon and Kate +8, that also irritates me.

Why oh why is this entertainment???????

I really don't give a flying farce about people having oogles of children. As long as cps doesn't need to be called in to protect the children, fine. Whatever. I would Prefer that they consider adopting 18 children from starving countries or hell from the usa, but whatever. It's the fact that the Parents are turning their 'adventure in parenting' into a way to make money.

I wonder if it is Less child slavery and more child exploitation. I readily admit I could be wrong, I don't know any of these people, but as Hortensia said, by going on tv they are setting themselves up for some sort of judgement call.

I'm not going to say I completely agree with the decision to have that many children.

I will say:

There was a time that it was GOOD to have children that learned useful skills and were taught how to be a part of a family. Children now a days don't learn how to do basic, ordinary skills that can serve them a lifetime.

Gardening, canning, knitting, crocheting, taking care of livestock, learning to build homes from ground zero...these things are rarely taught to children. Instead, they are taught to watch t.v., play video games, skateboard, 'hang out' aimlessly with their friends after school doing nothing useful. We're constantly "finding things" for our kids to do that really teach them valueless lessons. After school activities that focus primarily on academics, athletics or just keeping them out of trouble, take up so much of their time that they have no time to learn life-skill lessons that could serve them much better than academics/athletics alone.

I know More people in my age group than not that have little idea how to care for a garden or even cook from scratch.

I give these people credit for taking their responsibility as parents serious enough to make sure that their children are home and being taught valuable life lessons and skills that will stay with them a lifetime, as opposed to the people who honestly would rather shuck the responsibility of raising their kids onto the public school system and government.

I hardly would call these children slaves, seeing as they have food on their table, a nice home to live in and parents that truly care about them. Perhaps I don't agree with their religious beliefs that led them to this decision, but teaching your children to be an active member of the family and teaching them responsibility is hardly the grounds for slavery.

Fireworks/Kids/Non licensed person...ok? or bad idea?

i've been invited by a group of friends to join them at their house shooting off fireworks.

ok, first red flag is i know they are not licensed and the fireworks are illegal.

though, isn't it "illegal" the same as driving the car a bit over the speed limit?.

Freedom Frog, here in MI we have had a number of people badly injured and killed because they were blowing off fireworks.

JD is right in that they are not hard to control, unfortunately, too many people are just plain dumbasses and have no freaking clue how NOT to get their head blown off (as in the case of a woman last year who stuck her head OVER the thing when it didn't go off. When it did.....well she's dead now and her son watched the entire thing).

Point being: Yes there are non professionals who know what they're doing. But too often, they don't.

We had neighbors next door blow off some real pretty, real illegal stuff their first 4th of July. They blew them off feet away from our bedroom windows, scared my dog, scared my daughter and they honestly didn't care. The following year, the people behind us blew them off and there was really little room between our homes. When they were asked to stop doing it, they copped an attitude. Too often, people who want to blow them off have really given little to no thought to the area in which they are playing around and honestly only care about their own fun.

In this day and age, neighborhoods are not very close knit and people really have no idea who lives next door to them or behind them. They know little about the neighbors with the autistic son or the person struggling with an illness. They are quite often consumed with their own needs and desires and do not take into consideration their surroundings before making the decision to have the fireworks show.

This is NOT always the case. There are times still where neighbors have a close knit relationship to where it's become a neighborhood tradition. However, as you said, you don't know these people that well and without having answers to the above questions it's perfectly okay to be the bad guy and say no.
